Adolph A Weinman was the winner a national competition to design the new US half dollar. Born in southern Germany in the city of Karlsruhe he move here with his mother and became a prominent US sculptor under the guidance of the famous August St Gaudens. The face of the coin is a full figure of Lady Liberty in a long gown with an American flag across her shoulders and billowing around her.
